Day
1. Kraków
Arrival in Kraków. Dinner and overnight at the youth hotel.
Day 2. Kraków - Wieliczka
Sightseeing tour of the Old Town including The
Royal Way which runs from the Barbican (Medieval defensive
fortification) along Florianska Street to the Market Square.
Visit the St Mary's church with its majestic, wooden
altar carved by Veit Stoss and the medieval cloth halls at
the very centre of the city. Then a guided tour of the Collegium
Maius, the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University,
housing among others original astronomical devices used by
Nicolaus Copernicus. Tour ends on the Wawel Hill with a guided
visit to the Royal Cathedral with tombs of Polish rulers.
After lunch an excursion to the nearby salt mine in Wieliczka
with the underground world of chambers, corridors, chapels
and statues carved in salt by generations of miners - quite
unique tourist attraction in the world. Return to hotel in
Kraków. Diner and overnight
Day 3. Kraków
A panoramic tour of the quarter Nowa Huta on the
outskirts of Kraków. The quarter was built just after the
war for the working class in the typical socrealistic style.
Guided visit to one of the largest steelworks in
Europe from the communist time. A local representative
gives a talk on environmental issues. Next school visit
in Nowa Huta. Lunch. Free time. Guided tour of the
Jewish quarter Kazimierz with the monuments of Jewish
culture.
Day 4. Kraków - Auschwitz - Zakopane (200 km)
Drive to Oswiecim. Visit the former concentration camp
Auschwitz-Birkenau. Lunch. After lunch visit to the nearby
Chamrmeze Monastery housing a moving expositon of
drawings by Marian Kolodziej, one of the first Auschwitz
prisoners, presenting in a unique way the camp life of prisoners.
Departure to Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains. Dinner
and overnight at hotel in Zakopane.
Day 5. Zakopane - Sromowce - Zakopane (150 km)
A short guided tour of the town. Next, a wandering in
one of the Tatras National Park valleys. Lunch in Chocholow,
a small mountain village with the unique wooden architecture.
Arrival in Sromowce Nizne for the 10 km long raft trip
on Dunajec river. The smoothly going wooden rafts led
by highlanders, give you a chance to admire the scenic surroundings
of Pienieny Mountains with limestone rocks and forests. Back
in Zakopane for dinner and overnight.
Day 6. Zakopane
